HOME AT LAST
After lots of changes and some more aggravation (what would vacations be without it) we are all home safe and sound.
We had to check out of the hotel at 10 AM which we did and sat around the lobby until at 11:55 pickup for the airport. The same drivers that picked us up on Sunday came back again. I guess they liked their tips. After the short drive we got there only to find out the flight was delayed an hour which would complicate our connecting flight out of Buenos Aires and it would make it almost impossible. The line to check in was very long and it took forever to get to the desk. I was lucky enough to find a seat but everyone else stood on line. Sometime it pays to be a crip. When we got to the window we asked about the connection and she at first she said no problem and then a second later said she was going to change our flight to a later one so there would be no problem at all. She took us off our flight that was going from Buenos Aires to Santiage Chile and then to Miami and put us on a flight from Buenos Aires directly to Miami. The new flight was 3 1/2 hours later leaving and coming in 20 minutes later than the first one. It was actually a blessing that it was changed.
While waiting for our flight from Iguazu we did a little shopping and Enid and I picked up onyx penguins on icebergs and Carolyn bought a gorgeous leather and beaver small handbag which she promptly switched to use. The flight was fast but I think we waited just as long for our luggage to start coming through at the other end. Once again LAN was marvelous and extremely nice and accommodating to handicap people. I also have to say the the Spanish people are very respectful also. I actually went to the ladies room and was waiting on line when the mother and daughter ahead of me insisted that I go ahead of them. Wherever I went with my cane someone would get up to give me their seat too. I know it's not like that in the States.
After getting our luggage we went to meet our driver and thankfully he had picked up our luggage from the hotel we had left them at before going to Iguazu. The 1/2 hour ride took 2 hours because of rush hour traffic which makes the L.I.E. look good. We got to the other airport at about 7:30 and our first flight was supposed to leave at 6:50 so it's a good thing LAN had made the change. Carolyn got there just in time to check in for her 9:30 flight and we had a little rest time before we boarded our 10:30 flight. They do things very strangely there. Right before you get on the plane they search all your carry on bags and once you go through you have a problem if you need to use the bathroom again.
They put us in the first row of economy but the seats were really tight so after take off we moved to 2 seats 3 rows back which were better for our backsides but less leg room. I guess it was a tradeoff. Watched a movie called Faster with The Rock (Dwayne Johnson) and enjoyed all the action. Tried to sleep but that didn't last too long so the flight seemed never ending. Jules and Rita were in business class so they had a good nights sleep.
When we landed there was a wheel chair waiting for me and let me tell you if I had to walk I'd still be there. Enid thinks we landed in Havanna and were walking to Miami. It was really a far walk. I didn't realize the airport was sooooooo big. We had to go through immigration and the line we were in was moving very slowly. By the time we had gotten though Jules and Rita had gotten all of our luggage. Then we had to go through customs and the agent decided to pick on the four of us and we had to go through a luggage scanner in a different room. One of my suitcases got tagged and it had to be inspected by an agent. I was watching how they were going through other peoples luggage and they were taking everything out and really checking everything. We waited about 20 minutes for an agent to come over and finally we got a young woman who was very nice. The minute she opened my suitcase there was a zip lock bag of tootsie roll pops and she said they must have thought it was fruit and let us go right after she saw that.
Then we had to find where to catch the bus to the car rental place and that was exciting. We had 10 heavy bags plus carryon that had to be schlepped on and off the shuttle bus. All the car rental places are in one building so when we got there (my suggestion) was we wait outside while Jules rented the van and he would come back to pick us and the luggage up. After about 15 minutes some woman in a uniform told us we couldn't stand there and had to go in the building. We explained that someone was renting a car and was coming back for us. She said the only vehicles allowed on that floor were shuttle buses and taxis. So we drag all the things inside and of course Jules was gone and we had no idea where or how he would find us. Rita went to the floor that Avis rentals were on but he wasn't there and we were there for at least an hour floating around and trying to solve the newest dilemna. Rita and Enid took their 2 luggage carts outside on the floor that the woman told us Jules couldn't get to and I took a luggage cart down to the Avis car rental floor. As the Avis lady was trying to help me Rita came down and said they found Jules (on the forbidden floor) and I took the last cart up there for him to load. How he got all the luggage in absolutely amazed me. I was the first drop off and I got home at 8:55so it basically took 3 1/2 hours to get home from the time we landed.
It was a fantastic vacation with great friends but still a disappointment that Antarctica is still on my bucket list.

DAYS 17 AND 18
We got off the ship very early and had to wait over 2 hours for our pick-up. There were so many Asians on the cruise that were taking buses wherever the heck they were going and everyone else waiting for buses, cabs, private cars that it was chaotic and we just sat back and watched it. As long as we weren´t involved it was fun. By the time our van came to pick us up the port was nearly deserted so it was an easy task. Of course we needed some excitement for the day and it seems there was a mix-up with the driver taking our bags for storage while we were in Iguazu. After several phone calls it was finally cleared up and we left them at Hotel Grande Buenos Aires. It was 5.00 per bag for 2 nights which was very convenient for us to leave them. When the driver picks us up after Iguazu he is supposed to have our bags in the car since we don´t have a lot of time between flights.
Then we get to the airport and eventually find out that our plane is mid field and we have to be bussed to the plane. I had ordered a wheel chair for all the flights and they told me to wait until everyone boarded and they were taking me to the plane in some kind of truck---not the bus. They thought I couldn´t walk up the plane stairs and I thought they planned on carrying me. No way, Jose so we took a bus to the plane and they had changed my seat to the first row. I think I was asleep before the plane even left Buenos Aires. The flight was short or my nap was long-whichever you prefer to say.
When we got to Iguazu there were 2 cabs that Jules had ordered before we left the states. About 15 minutes later we were at the hotel which didn´t look like much from the outside. It is the only hotel in the National Park so basically they got you. Our room is okay but the hotel needs a major refurbishment which who knows if it will ever get.
We didn´t do much as we got to the hotel almost 4 PM. We decided to go to the hotel dining room at 7 when they opened for dinner and I don´t think anyone really enjoyed the meal. I wanted to watch the Oscars but unfortunatly it was in Spanish and gave up after the first 2 awards. Our ankles looked like tree trunks from all our walking and the humidity which has to be at least almost 200 degrees. It´s amazing that the minute you walk out of the hotel the sweat starts to form all over your body.
Had a very good nights sleep and we wanted to go on a boat ride which goes under the falls and you get very wet but when we went to make the reservations the man told us we had to walk 130 steps somewhere along our trip. I knew I couldn´t make that trek and for one reason or another no one booked the boat. We found out we could walk to the Devils Throat and we decided to do that. When I tell you it was a long hike just to get to the railroad train which takes you part of the way, it was long believe me. When we finally got to the train station there were loads of people waiting for the train but one of the people that work there gave me a seat at the front of the line and told me when we come back there he would take me back to the hotel in a golf cart I was very excited. But I had no idea of how long the hike would be when we got off the train. Considering my knee was killing me with every step I took I gave it my all and made it all the way. It was absolutely magnificent and we got wet but not wet enough to cool me off. Carolyn was wearing a pedometer and she said we had walked 3.7 miles but it felt like a marathon to me.
When we got off the train we found Reuben again and he drove the 3 of us back to the hotel. I asked him if he would be able to drive us to the lower falls later in the day and he said yes. He told us to have the front desk him and he would take us. Jules and Rita had gone there after the train ride and when they got back to the hotel he said they really got soaked there and showed us the movies he took. We met for lunch and afterward we called for Reuben and he sent someone to pick us up and drive us part of the way. When he dropped us off he said someone would be there to pick us up in one hour. We saw a lot of this strange animals that we were taking pictures of. I noticed a sign that said the animal was called a Coatis and it bites. Then we started the second trek of the day and after an eternity we finally got to the lower falls and they were unbelievable. Took lots of pictures, got very wet, and made it back just as the golf cart was pulling up.
When we got back to our rooms I took a cold shower to try and cool off but that was impossible as my body heat was really bad. Went down to use one of the hotel computers and wrote almost a book on these two days but then something happened and I lost it all. We went for dinner at the bar in the hotel where they have burgers, pizza, quesadillas, etc. The bill tonight for the two of us was cheaper than one person last night and it was much better than the restaurant last night.
Tomorrow we leave for home but will not get there until 5 AM on Wednesday to this will be the last post for a while.

DAY 16---MONTEVIDEO, URUGUAY
The fact that the cruise is coming to an end is starting to depress me as it means leaving new found friends and more importantly means packing which I hate, hate, hate.
We've all agreed to meet at 9AM for breakfast and get off the ship around 10 AM. I decided to take the scooter and it's a good thing I did as we took a four mile trek. We had some problems as the city is definitely not handicap accessible. You would get to certain street corners and there would be a dip for wheelchairs but nothing on the other side so I would have to ride in the street until I found something. In some cases I didn't so I had to get off and try to push it either up or down the curb and ran it over my foot several times. That wasn't fun. We were out for about 3 1/2 hours and we had a good time. We couldn't have asked for better weather. Today it was sunny but there was a slight breeze. Apparently the people in Uruguay have never seen a scooter so half of the people we saw were staring at this novel mode of transportation.
When we got back to the ship we all went for lunch. Back to the cabin where Enid did a lot of her packing but I always put that off for the last minute. Went to the Constellation Lounge to give out the tips to the bartenders and then went to Dick and Linda's cabin for sailaway and then back to the lounge for our nightly drinks.
As we walked into the dining room Cihan told us we were going to be 9 for dinner. One of the officers we met last night accepted our dinner invitation and joined us. His name was Verdan and he is sure he will be on the Century when we go to Australia. Dinner was very enjoyable but I really hate saying goodbyes. After dinner I finally came upstairs and packed and for some strange reason my luggage is much lighter now than when I came. What's really weird is everyone is saying the same thing.
Tomorrow we fly to Iguazu Falls so I'm not sure when I'll be able to send another update.

DAY 15----ANOTHER SEA DAY
We got up in time to meet Jules and Rita at 9 Am as promised. After breakfast we went to the theater where they were having a crew talent show. It's pretty sad when we have to say that they were better than the paid entertainment on the ship The ships singers and dancers were the only other good shows. As I've previously stated this was the worst entertainment on any ship and a huge disappintment.
We stayed in the theater after the talent show as they were having a cook off between 2 chefs and 2 audience members. We have done this on other cruises (Lauren was picked last time) and it's always been fun. After the cooking was done they had to pick 3 judges from the audience so Enid and I pointed to Dick and he was chosen. Not only did he sample the food but he just continued to eat almost everything on the plate. He had us cracking up. When it was over we asked if he was ready for lunch.
Tonight is the last formal night so we came up to the cabin after lunch to relax and get ready for dinner. Of course we went to the lounge for our drinks and then dinner. We invited Bettina and Miguel to join us for dinner and Cihan set the table for 10 and it turned out to be a lovely time. We invited them to join us anytime they can find the time.
Tonight was another production show which was excellent. Of course we went to the buffet for our coffee and teas before going to bed.

DAY 14---ANOTHER SEA DAY
Due to extreme sleep deprivation I screwed up and posted day 13 two times. This is going to be from our combined memories so some of this might or might not have happened except in our minds. The story you are about to read could be a figment of our combined imaginations.
We didn't set a wake up call but our good friend Julesl decided that 8:15 was late enough and called to wake us. Before breakfast we went to the solarium to save seats for the day. When we got back some nasty person had taken our jackets and bags off the chair and had thrown them on the floor. To add insult to injury no one was sitting in them so why the mischief is the question.
We had plans for dinner at the S.S United States with our entire crew and we had a fantastic time there. Oswald came to visit with us and Cihan came down to have Enid look at tomorrows menu so she could order her low salt diet. When it came time to pay Enid and I were shocked that Bettina had comped us for dinner. That was a lovely surprise.
After dinner we went to see Dancing with the Stripes which was very funny. Some of the officers were very funny and very poor dancers so I took a video of Oswald and told him I was going to blackmail him.
After that Dick joined Carolyn, Enid and myself up in the buffet where we sat around until 12:30 but since we lose an hour it was 1:30 and we made plans to Jules and Rita at 9 AM so it was another short sleep night.

DAY 13---AROUND CAPE HORN
Another fast night's sleep. Up at 6 AM and went to Carolyn's cabin to see Cape Horn and supposedly have really rough seas---NOT. To everyones delight the seas were almost like glass. Carolyn had ordered enough food from room service to feed another 10 people and we didn't stay long as we wanted to get lounges in the solarium befoore it got to crowded. I took my scooter with me today as I have done quite a bit of damage to my body and I'm trying to repair the damage.
The solarium was filling up fast as everyone wanted to see the Horn from there as it was warm. I did my normal solarium thing by reading a few pages on my Kindle and then a nap. I repeated this several times throughout the day.
This afternoon there was a Captains Club event in the Constellation Lounge which we went to but didn't stay long as the food they were serving was not to our liking. Dick, Linda and Carolyn joined us and we all brought our food to a table in the solarium and had lunch together.
Tonight was formal night so we got ourselves spiffied up and went tto our cocktail hour which was entertainment for the evening. There was a man sitting in the club that wasn't Elite but said he was waiting for his friends that went to make a future cruise booking. In the meantime he had 2 apple martinis and a glass of wine in front of him which he drank. Tanushka (captains circle hostess) explained to him that he would have to pay for his drinks. Somehow he convinced the waiters to bring him more and before we knew it, he had 5 apple martinis lined up in front of him. We took turns walking past him and checking his progress. He spilled one, drank 3 more and had 1 left on the table because he fell asleep. When he finally woke up he found his way to the elevators and got in the same one as Jules and Rita. He told them the floor he wanted since he probably couldn't see the buttons.
The show was a production show with all the singers and dancers and it was very energetic. The dancers went all out with their costume changes and their dancing. After that went to the casino and gave back some of their money and then up to the buffet with Carolyn where we sat around for about 45 minutes just shooting the breeze.

DAY 12--ANOTHER DAY IN USHUAIA
Today we got another early startl but there was a mix up with oue private tour guide. Jules had emailed him this morning to find out he had showed up yesterday knowing the ship was coming in a day early. He and Jules agreed for us to meet at 9AM where we get off the ship. We stood around for about an hour with winds of about 20 mph and the winds made for a very hard wait. It's a long pier to walk so I started out before the rest and the wind almost took me off my feet. Can you picture that scene?
Jules, Rita and Enid caught up to me and when we entered the local street there was the guide. We thought he meant on the pier and he thought at the end of the pier. So off we went and first he took us to Tierra Del Fuego which is a National Park and we stopped several times for pictures. This is such a beautiful area. We went to other places all around for about 3 hours and it was another great day. Thankfully the winds were not as strong and the temperature rose enough to be comfortable.
He said taxis were not allowed on the pier so he dropped us off at the beginning but I had walked my limit today so luckily Enid was able to communicate enough with the security guard and he got a wheel chair and took me all the way back to the ship. If I had to walk it, I'd still be doing it.
I didn't have a lot of time so I tried something new to dry my hair. It was Enid's hot air brush and it really straightened it a lot but had a little body to it. I thought it looked different for me and decided to leave it that way for a change. I was so surprised when a few folks gave me a compliment on my hair. I might try it again tomorrow as it will be the second formal night. Dinner was nothing special but Jules had asked if they would make key lime pie for him and CiHan came across once again.
I finally used my scooter for the first time tonight as I have done lots and lots of walking up until now. It took some getting used to but after breaking my ankles 3 times and using a scooter those times made it easier to get adjusted.
The show tonight was a singer named Claude Eric Brunelle and he had a very good voice but he really loved himself a lot more than the entire audience. He needs to perform his act in front of a mirror so he could see the faces he makes as he sings and dances (sometimes prances) around the stage.
Enid and I were very excited about having a sea day tomorrow but before we went into dinner the captain made an announcement that tomorrow we will be passing Cape Horn at 7 AM so we have to get up at 6AM and go to Carolyn's cabin at 6:30 so we can see whatever there will be to see. I sure hope it will be exciting as we are definitely becoming sleep deprived.
Bye for now. I have been going to sleep about 2-3 hours earlier than when I'm home from sheer exhaustion.
Even though it was 2 PM we went to the buffet and had some lunch.
